Of the citadel / fortress mainly the south-eastern wall, the so-called Bastion San Miguel and a city gate with a drawbridge are preserved. The remains of the foundations and walls of other bastions can be found throughout the old town.

The Bastion of San Miguel is one of Colonia del Sacramento's main attractions, a must-see for travelers who want to experience history and colonial charm. The Bastion was built by the Portuguese in 1745 as part of the fortified citadel to defend against Spanish and English invasions. Much of the walls, cannons and defensive terraces still remain. From the Bastion, you can enjoy great views of the Río de la Plata and the historic district. Visitors can climb the wall, hike through the ravines and enjoy the scenic scenery at sunset. Entry to the site is free and there are shops, ice cream parlors and well-maintained public restrooms nearby. Although there is not much to see inside the complex, the Bastion is an important part of Uruguayan history and a must-see when visiting Colonia del Sacramento.
