The street begins at Plaza Mayor and descends towards the Río de la Plata. It is a narrow, Portuguese-style street with wedge-shaped cobblestones and no sidewalks, the sides sloping down towards the center, forming a drainage channel.

Built in the first half of the 18th century, the houses have stone walls, tiled roofs and ceramic tile floors. The doors and windows are small and made of wood, only houses with gabled roofs have survived, but there were also houses with three and four sloping roofs.

The calle de los suspiros (German = Alley of Sighs) is one of the most famous sights in Colonia del Sacramento.

You get an impression of the boom of those years and are taken back in time. The buildings are fascinating and exude a charm that is difficult to describe. Some of the buildings are more than 300 years old and are still in immaculate condition. Many of them still have their original color, which has only been changed by natural circumstances such as weather and time.

The stories and myths of the "Alley of Sighs" are numerous and some are told over and over again.

      - It is said that the slaves sentenced to death sighed while being transported along the street to the Rio de la Plata. There they were then drowned in the river at high tide.

      - Apparently, after their arrival, the slaves were taken from the boats directly to the cellars of the calle de los suspiros, where they had to work themselves to death. These sighs extended to the silence of the slaves' death.

      - Another myth is that the sighs came from the brothels in the calle de los suspiros. The sailors arrived in Colonia tired from work and wanted to treat themselves to some fun.

      - It is also said that the sailors roamed the alley and watched the prostitutes, sighing at their beauty.

      - Another, very sad, story tells of a young girl waiting here for her supposed lover. A stranger stabbed her in the chest. The sigh in the face of death was the only thing that was heard when the girl disappeared.

To date, none of the stories have been scientifically confirmed.
