The history of the municipal theater and former double adult education center

Even before the start of the First World War, the city bought a plot of land for a new school building. The First World War and the subsequent poor economic situation meant that it was not until 1924 that the city announced a limited competition for the construction of a double elementary school with an auditorium. In addition to the city building authority, the Berlin architect Bruno Taut participated with a design. The third draft author can no longer be determined. The group of buildings was erected between 1927 and 1930. During the construction work, the concept changed with a clear shift towards a theater building that can also be used as a school auditorium. The group of buildings consists of cubic structures with a flat roof. The middle part is formed by the four-storey school building, which is bounded on the sides by the theater and the gymnasium with a drawing terrace and an astronomy tower. All buildings are plastered in a reddish tone, with a plaster wall with light blue metal railings separating the school and the theater from the street.

The two schools with reform pedagogical curriculum were on 7./8. Inaugurated August 1930. On September 29, 1930, the first season of the subscription theater without its own ensemble was opened with a festive performance of the operetta "Die Fledermaus" by Johann Strauss. The first theatrical performance took place on September 15, 1930. Edward Carpenter's comedy "Father Being Very Much" was performed. In advance, the adult education center organized a number of events for the new building. In 1933, the Friedrich-Ebert-School was renamed the Hindenburg School and the reform pedagogical teaching program was abolished. The founding rector Erwin Münchow was dismissed and later arrested and held in a concentration camp.

From June 1944, the building ensemble was used by armaments companies in a way that was not intended. They also built the bunker in the schoolyard. From 1945 to 1952 the Red Army set up an officers' cinema in the theatre. It was only in 1952 that school operations in the Ernst Thälmann High School and the theater could be resumed. Today the elementary school bears the name Friedrich-Ebert again.
