Via del Fosso, also known as Via dei Fossi among Lucca residents, is one of the most characteristic streets of Lucca. This street follows the path of the moat, dug in 1376 to defend the eastern part of the city. For centuries, the water of the canal was used as a driving force for numerous craft workshops, including silk factories. Still today, the street is characterized by a specific type of building, functional for the silk activities, with open terraces on the upper floors, used as drying racks, and the ground floor covered with cross vaults that allowed the use of various mechanical devices, powered by the water of the canal.
