Built in 1118, it was taken over by the state during the Napoleonic period, and completely renovated when it was reopened for worship in 1821. Of the medieval structures, only the southern side remains, reused in the current construction. What remains of the ancient furnishings is the Madonna in Glory between Saints Leonardo and Mark the Evangelist by Giovanni Marracci. Some paintings already located in the destroyed Gonfalone oratory also became part of its heritage, including the Madonna della Misericordia by Paolo Biancucci and the Madonna dei Miracoli by Gaspare Mannucci, preserved in the sacristy. In 1917 a chapel was opened, the work of the painter Giuseppe Lunardi, which is the only organic example of liberty in a church in Lucca, and where a Madonna with Child by the sculptor Augusto Passaglia is venerated
