The Porta San Donato is an important western gateway to the city of Lucca. Built between 1629 and 1639, this gate replaced an earlier version from 1590 that was part of the former ring of walls. Originally there was also a drawbridge at this gate. The statues on the sides of the gate depict San Donato and San Paolin. The older version of the gate can still be seen at the current Piazzale Verdi.
