The Markt is the most important place in this historic village.
The Retranchement fortress slowly grew into a real village that lost its military function in 1680. At the end of the eighteenth century, the fortress was renovated twice when war threatened. But in 1795 her role was finally played out. Today only the well-preserved steep ramparts and moats and Fort Nassau bear witness to Retranchement's strategically important past. Retranchement is a true landscape gem and the ramparts and canals are home to rare plants and animals. A walking path runs over a large part of the ramparts.
