Esbjerg is the only economically significant port city on Denmark's North Sea coast.
At the beginning of the 21st century, Esbjerg Harbor benefited from the growing offshore industry, especially for offshore wind energy. In 2013, wind turbines with a total capacity of 1.6 gigawatts were handled here. The total handling volume in the port of Esbjerg was 4.6 million tons in 2013, and 19,823 ship calls were counted. Sales amounted to EUR 28.9 million and profit was EUR 10.4 million.
From the harbor in Esbjerg there is a ferry connection to the island of Fanø.
