The place name "Wurmloch" comes from Middle High German and is made up of the words "Urm" (snake) and "Loh" (forest). Consequently, the place name can be interpreted as "snake forest". Why the village has this peculiar name remains a mystery. What is certain, however, is that Wurmloch can boast of one of the most magnificent and, in terms of size, the mightiest church fortresses.

Due to its high architectural value and the almost completely preserved fortifications, the building was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.

When looking at the complex, visitors can only marvel at how the inhabitants of Wurmloch were once able to build it.
