The bastion of Biertan (Romanian Biserica fortificată din Biertan) is a late Gothic fortified church in Biertan, Sibiu County, in the historic landscape of Transylvania in present-day Romania. It was built at the end of the 15th century by Transylvanian Saxons; as a Roman Catholic church at that time, it was dedicated to Mary. An inscription on the triumphal arch dated 1522 may refer to the completion of the church. After the parish priest Lukas Unglerus (1526-1600) was elected Bishop of the Evangelical Church in 1572, the church became the episcopal seat of the Evangelical Church A.B. and remained until the relocation of the bishopric in 1867 spiritual center of the Transylvanian Saxons. With the surrounding village belongs the fortified church since 1993 to the UNESCO World Heritage.de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirchenburg_von_Birth%C3%A4lm

The place Biertan is located on the former royal soil in a side valley of Târnava Mare. The first written mention dates from 1283. The fortified church was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. It rises on a steep hill in the middle of the village. The inner, oldest wall of the castle is dated to the end of the 14th or early 15th century. Today, the fortified church is a major tourist attraction and its silhouette is known worldwide. Every year, it is the scene of the so-called "Sachsentreffen", the Transylvanian Saxons still remaining in Transylvania.
