The Schutsluis Willem I is a protective lock in Amsterdam-North that forms the connection between the river IJ and the southern beginning of the Noordhollandsch Canal and is located directly opposite the Central Station. In 1824 the lock was built as the first section of the canal between Amsterdam and Den Helder. Forty years later, the Willem III lock was built next to the existing lock to accommodate the increased traffic. In 2009 the canal was placed under monument protection.
