The Reguliersgracht was constructed as part of the Fourth Expansion of Amsterdam, from 1658, and named after the regular monastery. This monastery was founded in 1394 outside the then city gates, approximately where the current Utrechtsestraat and the Keizersgracht intersect. It was intended for the regular canons of the order of Saint Augustine, who lived according to the rule of this saint Augustine. The monastery was destroyed by fire in 1532 and was not rebuilt.

The name of the ‘regulars’ returned in the Regulierspoort, which was built between 1480 and 1487 and was one of the three large gates in the late medieval city wall. The Reguliersgracht then ended in that gate.

When the wall was demolished, the gate was preserved until it burned down in 1619. Only one of the towers was spared and forms the lower part of what is now called the Munttoren. Rembrandtplein was also originally named after the monks: until 1876 it was known as Reguliersplein or Reguliersmarkt.

To give the square more space, the Reguliersgracht from Reguliersbreestraat to Reguliersdwarsstraat was filled in in 1694; in 1785, Thorbeckeplein was created by filling in up to Herengracht.
