    Schönsee was granted market rights as early as 1354 and developed into a center for the livestock and salt trade. The livestock was primarily pigs, which were driven from the towns near the Czech border to Schönsee for the market. One of these routes was the "Sautreibergasse" (Sautreiber Lane). The reason for the disappearance of the Sautreibergasse was the decline of the salt trade in the 18th century.

    The Sautreibergasse experienced a brief renaissance during World War II as a smuggling route for livestock and tobacco.
