Max Slevogt was born in Landshut on October 8, 1868, the son of Bavarian Captain Friedrich von Slevogt. After his father's death, Slevogt moved to Würzburg with his mother, Caroline von Slevogt. Even during his school years, he frequently visited Landau and the Finkler family, who lived on the Neukastel estate. He later married the cigar manufacturer's daughter and, in 1914, bought the "Slevogthof" from his father-in-law, redesigning it entirely to his own design.
