The castle was commissioned by Johann Wilhelm (called Jan Wellem) II in 1703 as a hunting lodge. Used as a field hospital during the coalition wars from 1793 and again in 1813, from 1840 to 1918 a Prussian cadet establishment. 1935-1945 National Political Educational Institute of the National Socialists. After 1945 it was used briefly by English and then by Belgian troops. From 1965 to 1997 the castle was the seat of a Belgian high school. Behind the castle, at the castle café, there is a plaque commemorating the last Medici, wife of Jan Wellem II.
