Bronze figure by Sepp Hürten from 1989, also known as the chocolate or praline girl. Reminiscent of the workers in the chocolate factory in Südstadt: stadt-koeln.de/artikel/71541/index.html

In 1989, this stone fountain with the bronze figure was donated by the IG Severinsviertel to redesign the square. Residents from the neighborhood look after the fountain and regularly check that everything is in order.

A competition was held to make Severinskirchplatz more beautiful. The result was the sculpture of the Stollwerck Girl by Sepp Hürten. The beautiful girl is also known as the chocolate or praline girl. The connection to chocolate comes from the former Stollwerck chocolate factory, which was located in the southern part of the city until the 1970s.

The workers in the chocolate factory had a dubious reputation. They were accused of working (usually 14 to 16 years old) and not preparing themselves for the role of housewife and mother. A newspaper article from 1902 reported that they could not run a household, sew or cook. If you look at the sculpture, you will notice the girl's somewhat provocative pose. The girl cheekily offers the chocolate to passers-by. On the one hand, it reminds us of the girls' reputation, but also of their emancipated attitude as workers.
