The Zwartberg coal mine was fully called “Société Anonyme Charbonnages des Liégeois en Campine” and was founded in 1910 with capital from Liège. Operations began in 1925. The mine closed in 1966, which was accompanied by riots that claimed some lives. After the mine closed, almost all buildings and facilities were demolished. The slag heap, office building and some smaller buildings survive. The mining site was transformed into the Genk-Noord industrial zone.
