Headframes and winding towers were used to transport the coal and the miners. This example dates from 1963. The frame was built over the old structure, which explains the difference in height. Interesting fact: The Winterslag coal mine houses both the oldest headframe (1915) and the newest (1963) in the Kempen coal basin. The view from the newest winding tower is truly worth the climb!
