This memorial (Monumento a los Caídos por España), also known as the "Obelisco", commemorates the victims of the uprising on 2 May 1808 (Dos de Mayo) in Madrid against the French occupation. After the uprising, numerous Spaniards were executed here by the French.

It is also the national memorial for all Spaniards who have been killed in war. It is similar to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the UK/US but I’m unsure if it contains such a tomb? English sources vary 🤷

It also has a permanent eternal gas flame. This might explain the lack of access by a high sided railing fence.
