Today's Sulfersteg served as a river crossing for a so-called "artificial rod" that led from a water wheel of the town mill to the saltworks on the Haalplatz and powered a pumping station there. It was originally called the "2nd artificial bridge". It lost this function after the saltworks stopped processing brine from the Haalbrunnen in 1925. This meant that it could now be used as a pedestrian bridge. For safety reasons, the bridge was replaced by a replica in 1955, and parts of the original went to the German Museum in Munich.
