Sustainability plays a major role in the renovation of the parliament building. Although care is always taken to preserve the historical substance, the aim is to make the building fit for the future. Monument protection can be reconciled with the strict requirements of sustainability, environmental and climate protection. The result is a completely new quality. The energy requirements of the House of Lords are to be significantly lower in the future - even though the usable area is being expanded by 10,000 square meters. Around 740 windows have been thermally renovated, and the quality of the indoor air has been significantly improved thanks to the latest ventilation technology. The roof has also been renovated and insulated, and the lighting is being completely converted to LED. The concept for the renovation was awarded "Gold" status in 2016 by the climate protection initiative "klimaaktiv" and the Austrian Society for Sustainable Construction.
