The "Cais das Colunas (Wharf of the Columns)" is located on the southern edge of the Praça do Comércio in the historic center of Lisbon. The pier was named after the pillars that line either side of the marble staircase leading to the Tagus. This was once the entrance to the city, where heads of state and important personalities were received. Designed by architect Eugénio dos Santos, the columns - said to be replicas of those in Solomon's Temple - represent wisdom and devotion.
