The first Mennonites settled in Krefeld from 1607, and during the first expansion of the city (from 1691) they were permitted to build their own church - based on the plans of the architect Heinrich Johann Freyse. It was built as a court church set back from the street on Königstraße and can be entered through a portal that still exists today. Today, this portal represents the oldest cultural monument within the Krefeld ramparts. The year 1693 is recorded above the entrance as the year of construction, and the first use of the church is documented as 1696.
