The Catholic parish church of St. Dionysius was built in 1752-54 after religious freedom was granted as part of the fourth expansion of the city. In order to give Rheinstrasse an effective end, the church was not oriented eastwards, unlike most other churches. In 1840-43, the building was extended by a three-aisled transept, which doubled the floor space. The old baroque tower was not replaced by the current one in neo-Gothic style until 1894. With its copper dome, it is considered a landmark of the city. The interior of the church is dominated by the 20 Ionic columns clad in yellow stucco marble and the high arched windows.

The open door is visible from afar. After the hectic city, you should happily accept this inviting offer. The light and the peace in the bright church interior invite you to linger, relax and perhaps even pray. City pastoral care enriches the city community with its diversity.

The door is open. You can see it from afar because light shines through. Very welcoming. Also as a contrast to the Mennonite Church, which is beautiful in its modesty but keeps the gates closed.
