      What are Beigla?

Beigla are Alprechtsholzer, who until 1868 regulated the cooperative ownership of the Triesenberg Maiensässe Gross- and Chleistäg (Steg) and Silum. Name Beigla from Alemannic beiala (incision, rune, mark). In contrast to the municipal alps, the owners of the cooperative alps own a different number of freely transferable and salable shares in the yield from grazing and wood use (grazing rights). These were recorded on the angularly carved Beigla, up to 20 cm long, 3–4 cm wide and 1–2 cm thick, sometimes decorated and bearing the house mark of the respective owner. A full slash corresponded to one part, half a slash to half, and a dot-like incision ("stump") to a quarter of a part. The sticks were strung on a string and kept in a drawer in the sacristy of the parish church. Changes of ownership could only be carved in the presence of a pastor, judge (head of the community), church officials and probably also a jury and bailiffs. In 1868 the Beigla were replaced by written directories. Only the Beigla of the “Grosssteg Alpine Cooperative” have survived; they are in the Walser Heimatmuseum Triesenberg and in the Liechtensteinisches Landesmuseum.
