    Walser village Triesenberg
Triesenberg is a traditional mountain village in Liechtenstein. Originated from a Walser settlement in the 13th/14th century. Century, the community has honored its history throughout the years.
For many years they were considered “stubborn”, “idiosyncratic” and “tough” – in an endearing way: the Triesenbergers, who live high above the Liechtenstein capital Vaduz and the neighboring community of Triesen. Whether the difference to the rest of the country's population is actually that great today remains to be seen. What is certain is that the people of Triesenberg are very proud of their origins, because unlike those people in the valley, the mountain community is one of the direct descendants of the Walser - the cattle breeders and mountain farmers from the Valais who made their home in the 12th and 13th centuries have left to scatter in all directions. The first written evidence of Walsers on Triesenberg can be found in a document from 1355, an arbitration award from Count Ammann, in which part of the Alpe Malbun was awarded to them. But it is assumed that they settled in Liechtenstein at the end of the 13th century.
Of course there is a lot to tell about the history of the Walser people and their development in Triesenberg. In the following, however, the question will be examined in which areas the Walser spirit can still be felt today. Even though the community has now developed into a popular place to live for all residents of the state, Triesenberg has remained a very “special place” in many ways. And the solidarity among the people of Triesenberg is as strong as ever.

The robust Walser dialect of the Triesenberg people
“What did he say?” many visitors ask themselves when they talk to a native of Triesenberg. Rightly so. Anyone who is not used to the robust Walser dialect will actually have difficulty understanding it. The dialect differs significantly from the dialects in the other communities and is characterized, among other things, by its unusual richness of vowels as well as the shift from the “s” to the “sch” or its peculiar diminutive forms. Mice become “Müüsch” or the forest becomes “Waldi”. It should be recognized as a great achievement for the people of Triesenberg that they have managed to maintain their language over such a long time and not allow it to be watered down. And it is a fact that the dialect is the most important common characteristic of all Walser people. It represents a link that is over 700 years old between all Walser settlements in the central Alpine region and the country of origin on the Rhône.
