The Kazematten are temporarily closed. Reopening planned 'SUMMER 2023'.
Highly recommended for military fortification enthusiasts. I myself was able to visit this museum in a distant past when the earth felt a bit cooler ;-)...
    What is going on?
The walls are in a bad condition. Because the safety of museum visitors and employees is paramount, the Water Board (owner) has decided to temporarily close De Kazematten for investigation.
In March 2022, it was found that cracks have appeared in the walls and that some walls are bulging. As a result of the salty environment and moisture, the walls in the Kazematten are in a worrying state.
    Historical indication:
The Casemates from 1811 lie on the border of land and water. This building is actually a monument within a monument. These casemates can be found in the heart of the Keizersbolwerk, part of the Vlissingen fortifications from 1548. It is not surprising that the emperors Charles V, Napoleon and naval hero Michiel de Ruyter used this complex. The strategic location in relation to Antwerp and England and the deep water make this a popular location. It has been a place of comings and goings for centuries.

      The casemates
The casemates, built in 1811, lie between land and water. In fact, this building is a monument within a monument. This casemate lies in the heart of the Keizerbolwerk, a section of the Vlissingen defensive wall from 1548.

Unfortunately, the casemates are closed as a precaution. During an inspection it was found that the walls are in a worse condition than before. The safety of museum visitors and staff is a top priority.
It is not surprising that historical figures such as Karel V, Michiel de Ruyter and Napoleon have visited this place again and again. The strategic location near Antwerp and the deep waterway made it the ideal starting point. A place of comings and goings for centuries. A casemate is a militaristic structure used to defend against enemy attackers.
What is striking is the original garrison bakery, which has remained surprisingly intact. Up to 4800 loaves of bread used to be baked there in a row.
