The Traunstein Viaduct is a 105 meter long and 25 meter high railway bridge on the Rosenheim–Salzburg railway line with four pillars, two abutments and five semicircular arches over the Traun. This makes it the highest bridge on the Bavarian Maximilian Railway and is considered the landmark of Traunstein. Planning for the construction of the line began as early as 1854. In January 1858, work began in the area of the royal railway construction section in Traunstein. The viaduct is a quarry stone masonry from Nagelfluh. This was mainly mined in a quarry in the nearby Veitsgraben.[2] A total of 9500 cubic meters were installed. The cavities of the arches were filled with slag concrete. Greywacke was also used. A total of 420 wooden piles were driven into the ground to create the foundations for the pillars. Five meters deep for the two water piers and four meters deep for the two dry piers.

In order to facilitate construction, the bridge was initially erected around 100 meters east of the Traun on dry land. After completion, the river bed was then diverted so that the Traun now flowed under the new bridge. After that, the huge access dams on both sides were filled up.

Several hundred workers, mainly from Austria and Italy, worked on the construction of the viaduct. The work proved difficult and dangerous; there were several injured and several dead. Within a year alone, 804 construction workers had to be treated as inpatients in the Traunstein hospital. Ten people died while working.
