This road carved into the rock has very ancient origins having been built by the Etruscans. The reason why it was built is probably of a religious or votive nature, so much so that on the walls you can see several niches and there are many remains of Etruscan religious structures nearby. The walls, up to 12 meters high, generate very suggestive and exciting shadows. Truly an unmissable place.

It is in fact a “Tagliata”, a term used to indicate ancient Etruscan roads carved deep into tuff, present in the central area of ancient Etruria in the volcanic area around Lake Bolsena.

The Tagliata Etrusca, also known as Strada Signorino, is a historic cellar path in Viterbo, carved deep into tuff. This road of Etruscan origin winds between high tuff walls that are up to 12 meters high in some places. Surrounded by ancient trees, it is home to the Devil's Cave, with legends of nightly processions of ancient Etruscan priests. Although there are several theories about the function of these roads, it is generally accepted that they served as religious routes due to their proximity to sacred areas and necropolises.
