It is not entirely clear where the name Marly itself comes from. Possibly the name comes from the Machine of Marly, located along the Seine in Bougival. This was a large water wheel construction that pumped up water to supply the ponds and fountains of the Palace of Versailles with water. Presumably there was a similar water wheel construction in Westerlo in earlier times, served by the Laakske, a tributary of the Grote Nete.
