Fort Eben-Emael, an immense and unique underground complex
The completely underground military complex is excavated in 3 levels in a marl hill. The floor plan has a base of 750m, a height of 950m and a corridor system of more than 5km. In 1940, the total area of the military domain covered 75 hectares.

On the east side, the domain is bordered by the Albert Canal and quasi-vertical walls of 60 m high. The Jeker River runs to the northwest and a water moat was constructed for the ground defense of the site, which made it possible to flood the entrance to the fort. On the south side, a dry anti-tank ditch was dug with concrete walls 4m high. Barbed wire barriers and anti-tank obstacles completed the ground defense.

Two parts of Fort Eben-Emael visible in the steep walls of the Doorteken van Caestert, which you can visit above and in the hill on the other side ("underground"). There is also a sign here inviting you to do so. You can view parts of the fort that are really worth seeing (the bunkers, entrances, gun turrets, ventilation shafts, memorials) and much more if you walk from here to the bridge of Kanne or the bridge of Lanaye, which you just cross. and makes a small climb to the beautiful plateau. Everything is close to the Jeker and even if it is closed and you cannot go underground, it is worth it. Looking at it from here is also nice, but of course you won't see much.
