Fort Sint Pieter

Fort Sint Pieter has stood proudly atop the Sint-Pietersberg for more than 300 years. The main task of the fort was to protect the strategically located city of Maastricht.

On St. Pietersberg stands Fort St. Pieter, built at the beginning of the 18th century. Originally it had a military function and the Maastrichtians defended themselves here against the French. They succeeded for a long time, but ultimately the city had to surrender. Today you can visit the fort with a guide and then fortify yourself in the restaurant.

The fort can only be visited in the company of a guide. This shows you the mortar gallery, the loopholes, the secret well and the underground passages, but of course also the breathtaking view. The tour lasts about an hour and 15 minutes. Unfortunately, the fort is not accessible to wheelchairs.

natural area
The immediate vicinity of the fort is a protected nature area and is managed by Natuurmonumenten. The organization is working on the restoration of the fort, but deliberately leaves certain places in their dilapidated state. In this way, the habitat of plants and animals that have settled here is preserved.

The surrounding area
Just below the fort are the caves of St. Pieter. Did you know that they even tried to blow up the fort from the grottoes? The resulting damage is still visible. You can also go for wonderful walks in the area.
