The "old" Arnold monument was inaugurated on the second anniversary of Ernst Wilhelm Arnoldi's death on May 27, 1843 on what was then Erfurter Platz. On the initiative of the "Association for the Foundation of an Honorary Memorial for E. W. Arnoldi" the classicist monument was designed by the court building officer Gustav Eberhard (1805 - 1880). The "old" monument adorned the square, which was renamed after Arnoldi in 1858, for 166 years.
