The remaining pits 1a and 1b of the Merseburg East open-cast mine were acquired in 2003 by the Saale-Elster-Luppe-Aue Zweckverband (a special-purpose association), with support from the municipality of Schkopau. Between 1998 and 2000, the two pits were flooded via pipelines from the White Elster River. The resulting lakes were named Wallendorfer See and Raßnitzer See in 2002.
