The name 'Schulensbroek' is derived from 'broek van Schulen' and stands for a marshy, swampy greenland in Schulen located along rivers or streams that is flooded in winter. For centuries, the Schulensbroek was one large natural flood area that was flooded for several months a year. The pants were very fertile, to the delight of the farmers. Hay from the Schulensbroek was very popular. In the mid-1970s, people tried to contain the water of the Demer and its many tributaries by constructing a holding basin. The Schulensmeer became a fact.
