    In the summit area, the Wendener Stein bears an incomparable 36 meter long, 9 meter wide and 15 meter high natural phyllite slate rock, a protected natural monument and geotope. A bench has been cut into another rock for hikers. On the west side is the small Mariengrotte.

        The little figure of Mary had been standing in the grotto between Kleinwendern and Marktredwitz since the mid-1970s, many of them know it and some people occasionally hiked to Wendener Stein to lay flowers there. Alfons Heindl looked after and cleaned the area around the grotto. And as macabre as it sounds, it has only been possible to shed some light on its origins since the statue disappeared and was destroyed.

        A newspaper article about the broken glass found Rita Rodehau from Marktredwitz on the Madonna. She recognized the figure as the Madonna, before whom she had to pray and do penance in a small room of her grandparents as a child.

        Thus the trail led 120 years back to the Steinkirchner family in Marktredwitz, where the Madonna adorned a house altar. Pious women met regularly here for Bible study and prayer. In 1949 the grotto on Wendener Stein was built by this district, the Madonna figure came to this place about 25 years later. Donations have meanwhile been used to purchase a stable grille for the small grotto on Wendener-Stein, so that the statue will be better protected from vandals in the future.
