In the Hirschgrund at the Gasthaus Königsruhe stands in the Bode Valley directly below the lookout point on the Roßtrappe the Jungfernbrücke. This narrow stone pedestrian bridge allows you to cross the raging mountain river and joins the terrace and beer garden area on the north side. It is one of the few opportunities in the lower Bode Valley to get dry on the other side of the river. West of the bridge, the valley narrows to a very narrow gorge.
The delicate construction of the Jungfernbrücke forms a strong contrast to the harsh environment of rock and whitewater. According to legend, the building could allegedly only be crossed by virgins, otherwise it would collapse. Because the bridge still exists today, there probably should be little truth in this story.
Near the south side of the Jungfernbrücke begins a steep ascent to the Hexentanzplatz, which ends in the area of the zoo. The arduous path with numerous serpentines leads more than 250 meters in the air.
