Old bread shop, Melk
The picturesque shingle-roofed house from the 17th century has two corner towers with romantic keyholes. The three Melk bakers ran a joint shop here.
In old age, one of them or a baker's widow was allowed to live here and earn money from the sale of the bread. In addition to the bakers (1277) and butchers (1281), the cloth makers (1340), tailors (1433), bladesmiths and knife makers (1459) are among the earliest Melk guilds.
