The Gereons windmill was first mentioned in a document in 1446, after a fortified tower in the medieval city wall had been converted into a windmill with mill gear. The Gereonsmühle was one of the mills on the city wall of Cologne, which compensated for the failure of the ship mills, especially during floods and ice, and supplied the population with flour.

The mill tower, which had become dilapidated over time, was renovated in 1558. In 1720 the mill received a new grinder. In 1808, during the French period in Cologne (1794-1814), the mill and the mill building were repaired again by the city master builder P. Schmitz. The mill was in operation until the 19th century. During the Prussian period (1815-1918) the soil for the orchard was raised on the inside of the city wall.

In 1838 Andreas Hochkirch acquired the mill, but in 1908 it reverted to the city of Cologne.

Since 1950, the mill has been used as a meeting room for Catholic students.
