In June 1890 a church building association was founded in Holungen. A year later construction of the church began. The stones for this were broken in the nearby quarry south of Wehenberg.
The parish church was inaugurated on June 20, 1893.

The history of the church in Holungen dates back to the Middle Ages. Tradition has it that the first church is said to have stood on the site of today's old inn. Only later was it built in its current place.
