Wildungen is said to have been abandoned before 1500. The noble family von Wildungen in the Untereichsfeld family had their ancestral home in Wildungen, where a fortified manor is believed to be. It is said to have been related to the neighboring noble family von Brehme and was also located in Duderstadt from the 14th century.
When the sex of those from Wildungen became extinct cannot be precisely proven.
Today only the ruins of the church are there.

A legend has grown up around Wildungen: Mary, the Mother of God, is said to have fended off a Swedish attack by appearing in person and putting the soldiers to flight with one glance.
