Kri-Kri is a popular name for the Cretan wild goat, Capra aegagrus cretica, which is practically never seen, and certainly not in the eastern part of Sfakia. What lurks in Kallikratis Gorge (and wherever fences don't keep them out) are common house goats, irresponsibly letting their owners roam free. Because of the considerable damage to the landscape they cause (no tree can grow here without a fence, the old cobbled paths and terraces are destroyed) this is actually forbidden, and even more so in the Natura 2000 protected area, which includes the entire Sfakiotic mountain range, but the ranching mafia seem to enjoy immunity in Sfakia.
