Until the 1990s, the path through the gorge was the only direct connection between Kallikratis and the villages of Patsianos and Kapsodasos, located on the edge of the Frangokastello plain. Kallikratis was inhabited only in the summer (like Asfendu), the residents each had a house in the lower villages where they lived in the winter. Twice a year they walked through the gorge with their flocks of sheep and some household goods.
