"... At the beginning of the 19th century, an American farmer needed around 14 hours to mow an acre with a sickle. The English unit of area was equivalent to just under 4,047 square meters, which in turn was just under two-thirds of a football field. The 22-year-old farmer's son Cyrus McCormick, who worked in his father's agricultural machinery workshop in the US state of Virginia, wanted to make the laborious work more efficient. That's why he and his brother Leander James developed a horse-drawn mower by 1831. The cutting device was attached to the side so that the animals didn't trample on the grain..."
