      Botanical Garden, St.Gallen / History
The first botanical garden in St.Gallen was created in 1878 in the city park north of today's Nature and Art Museum. It was founded by the museum's first director, Prof. Dr. Bernhard Wartmann, who supplemented the objects in the museum with a living plant collection. When most of the garden had to make way for the construction of the Historical Museum in 1918, he found an alternative location around what is now the University of Education.

In 1934, the second botanical garden there also fell victim to construction projects. The call for a botanical garden did not die down. After a long struggle, on June 16, 1945, the groundbreaking ceremony for the botanical garden was carried out at the current location in Stephanshorn. This was followed by a ten-year construction phase in which school classes from the city actively participated. Prof. Dr. Kurt Aulich, biology teacher at the St. Gallen Cantonal School and landscape architect Paul Zülli, head of the Horticultural Office.

The city of St. Gallen, as the owner of the Botanical Garden, regularly ensures improvements and modernizations. In 1993, the architecturally remarkable Alpine House was built; in 1998, a new tropical house was built, which was supplemented with an orchid house in 2007. The outdoor area also underwent similar improvements. From 1990, each department received a facelift each year. The high point was 2011, when the Europe and America departments, the hay meadow, the pergola and the fern garden were completely renovated in one fell swoop.

Irony of history: After the Botanical Garden was driven out of the museum's surroundings in 1918, the Natural History Museum returned to the Botanical Garden after almost 100 years. The opening of the new Natural History Museum directly next to the Botanical Garden took place on November 12, 2016. The two institutions have a good working relationship.

The large Botanical Garden in St. Gallen is open and free of charge and offers both outdoor facilities and indoor spaces (tropical house, alpine house). Open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This is also the start of the Planet Trail towards Lake Constance.
