The first mention of a church in the upper village, i.e. above the Burgjoß moated castle, can be found in a document from 1167, which mentions a basilica in Jazaha. The first documented mention of Oberndorf can be found in the man book of the Counts of Hanau from 1404. Another documented mention of Oberndorf can be found in 1444, when the Lords of Thüngen sold their estate "on the Jossa", without the parish seat in Oberndorf and its church, to Hans von Hutten zu Hausen.
From 1540, Oberndorf was owned by the Archbishopric of Mainz. During the Thirty Years' War, the town and church were almost completely destroyed in 1634. During the Second World War in 1940, people were evacuated to rural areas such as Oberndorf due to the bombing of major cities such as Berlin; the family of the painter Alf Bayrle came to the town. He and his son, the later painter Thomas Bayrle, both stayed there until 1958. The existence of two mills is recorded for Oberndorf an der Jossa: the Lower Mill, at the edge of town towards Burgjoß, and the Old Mill. The latter was probably "rebuilt after the Thirty Years' War, in the second half of the 17th century". It was a grain mill with two grinding mechanisms that was "in operation 250 days a year, eleven to twelve hours a day". Competition from "large industrial mills" ultimately led to its closure in 1957. Today, this mill, which was repaired in 2010, is occasionally put into operation for demonstration purposes. From December 31, 1971, Oberndorf, Burgjoß and Pfaffenhausen formed the new municipality of Jossatal as part of the regional reform in Hesse. On July 1, 1974, this was merged with the municipality of Lettgenbrunn, by virtue of state law, to form the new municipality of Jossgrund.Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oberndorf_(Jossgrund%29
