Merseburg's townscape has featured several watermills, of which the Neumarktmühle (Neumarkt Mill) is the best preserved. It is located on the west bank of the Saale River, while the Neumarkt (New Market) is located east of the river. The name likely arose over time from its location on the street "Am Neumarkttor." First mentioned in 1283.
