Elector Johann Wilhelm had a straight avenue laid out from the main courtyard of the palace to Heidelberg. From 1748, under Elector Carl Theodor, the avenue lined with mulberry trees became the determining element for the baroque redesign of the summer residence and the "New Town". It runs directly from the Königstuhl (Heidelberg), via the Schwetzingen Castle Garden - partly as a visual axis - to the Kalmit, the highest elevation in the Palatinate Forest. Court astronomer Christian Mayer used this axis as a baseline for surveying the Electoral Palatinate - which is why it is also called the Palatina base.
