After the destruction of the Romanesque-Gothic abbey church during the religious wars, Abbot David decided to build a new church building. He wanted to build a Gothic church as usual. In that sense, the plans were drawn up. But they did not get further than plans and a short build-up above the foundations. It is abbot Ferdinand Van der Haeghen (1712-1754) who had the church built. He collected funds, underwritten loans and saw to its completion. A strong supporter of the new style, the entire building is finished in Baroque.
