Twisting is the interweaving of spun threads into a stronger whole because a single spun thread is much too weak. This image by Gis De Mayer keeps alive the memory of the "skramoeljekash", a street with poor workers' houses next to the Koepoort. Twining was also a cottage industry with which the poor families earned a little extra. Around 1900 Ninove was an industrial town and the Dender region was the cradle of Daensism. By the way, the “Christene Volkspartij” was founded in Okegem (municipality of Ninove).
